Club Profile

Overview

Forest Green Rovers Football Club is based in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England. Currently, the club competes in the National League, which is the fifth tier of the English football league system. The team is widely recognised for its environmentally conscious approach to football, pioneering eco-friendly practices both on and off the pitch.

History

The club was founded in October 1889 by E. J. H. Peach to represent the Forest Green area of Nailsworth. The name “Rovers” was adopted in 1893, and the team became a founding member of the Mid-Gloucestershire League in 1894. Early challenges included a temporary name change to Nailsworth Association Football Club and a withdrawal from league competition in 1896–97, but the club was re-established under its original name in 1898, absorbing local side Nailsworth Thursday. Forest Green began competing in multiple local leagues, including the Dursley and District League and the Stroud and District League, winning several early titles.

Throughout the 20th century, the club moved through various county and district leagues, securing numerous championships in the Dursley and District League (1902–03), Stroud and District League (1911–12, 1920–21), North Gloucestershire League (1920–21, 1921–22), Stroud Premier League (1934–37), and Gloucestershire Northern Senior League (1937–38, 1949–51). Periods of withdrawal and mergers, such as the 1911 union with Nailsworth to form Nailsworth and Forest Green United, punctuated their early history. They were founder members of the Gloucestershire County League in 1968 before moving to the Premier Division of the Hellenic League in 1975 under Peter Goring.

Forest Green achieved national recognition in the early 1980s by winning the Hellenic League in 1981–82 and capturing the FA Vase after a 3–0 victory over Rainworth Miners Welfare at Wembley. They subsequently spent 13 years in the Midland Division of the Southern League, briefly adopting the name Stroud F.C. before reverting to Forest Green Rovers. The club achieved successive Southern League titles in 1996–97 and 1997–98, earning promotion to the Conference and reaching the FA Trophy final twice in the early 2000s. A period of instability followed, including near relegations from the Conference, until Dale Vince acquired the club in 2010, initiating a transformation into a sustainable, vegan football club.

After substantial investment, Forest Green achieved promotion to the English Football League via the National League play-offs in 2017, ending a 19-year stay in non-League football. The club earned promotion to League One in 2022 after winning the League Two title but suffered back-to-back relegations, returning to the National League in 2024–25.

Competition Performance

Forest Green’s competition history is distinguished by local league dominance in the early and mid-20th century and a steady climb through the regional and national tiers. Their notable successes include the FA Vase win in 1982 and Southern League championships in 1996–97 and 1997–98, which secured their entry into the Football Conference. Within the Conference and later the National League, the club reached multiple FA Trophy finals (1999, 2001) and made historic FA Cup runs, including third-round appearances in 2008–09 and 2009–10, achieving victories over Football League opposition like Rotherham United and Rochdale.

The club’s ascent in the National League culminated in the 2016–17 season when they won the play-offs to enter League Two. In League Two, Forest Green displayed competitive resilience, securing play-off spots in multiple seasons before ultimately winning the 2021–22 League Two title under Rob Edwards, which promoted them to League One. However, their time in League One was short-lived, and subsequent managerial instability contributed to consecutive relegations back to the National League by 2024.

Stadium

Forest Green Rovers have played at The Lawn Ground since their early years until 2006. In that year, they relocated to The New Lawn, a purpose-built stadium with modern facilities and environmentally friendly features. The New Lawn has been developed with numerous eco-conscious innovations, reflecting the club’s commitment to sustainability. In 2021, the pitch was renamed The Fully Charged New Lawn following a partnership with the clean energy YouTube channel Fully Charged.

Identity

The club is widely recognised as the world’s first vegan football team, a status formalised in 2015 under the ownership of Dale Vince. This eco-centric philosophy extends to all aspects of the club, from organic pitch maintenance to meat-free catering. Forest Green Rovers are also the first football club globally to achieve carbon-neutral certification under the UNFCCC initiative.

The club’s kit has undergone significant changes over time. Traditionally, the home strip was black and white stripes, but in 2012, the team adopted a lime green and black kit to reflect its eco-friendly ethos, including a 2021 innovation of kits made from recycled plastic and coffee grounds. The club crest has similarly evolved, moving from a badge reminiscent of FC Barcelona to a more modern design incorporating the team’s heritage.

Supporter engagement is emphasised through participatory initiatives, including consultations on badge and kit changes. Notable shareholders, such as Héctor Bellerín, also contribute to the club’s public identity as a socially and environmentally conscious organisation.

Rivalries

Forest Green Rovers’ primary rivals are local Gloucestershire sides, with Nailsworth Town being regarded as the club’s most immediate competitor. While the club has also developed competitive rivalries over time with other regional teams due to league encounters and cup fixtures, their local derbies remain the focal point of supporter engagement. Other minor rivals include Stroud-based sides and teams with whom they have historically contested Southern League or National League positions.
