England 1939-46

1938-39 Special Wartime Football 1946-47

World War II broke out early into the 1939-40 season.

Between 1939 and 1946 regular competitive football in England was put on hold. With many footballers enlisting to serve in the military, clubs found themselves short of players and often relied on guest players to fill their teams.

During this period, both the Football League and the FA Cup were suspended. To keep the sport alive, regional league competitions were organised, but the matches played in these wartime tournaments are not included in players' official career statistics. This suspension marked a significant disruption in English football, as the focus shifted from the pitch to the war effort.
